The APSMO Mathematical Olympiads have been operating in Primary Schools since 1987 and in High Schools since 2003.

The organisation's original name was "Mathematical Olympiads for Primary Schools (MOPS)"

APSMO Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation incorporated in NSW on 5 September 1996.

Until 2007 the incorporation's name was 'Australian Primary Schools Mathematical Olympiads Inc.'

A special resolution was passed at our 2007 AGM to change the organisation's name to 'Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) Inc' to better describe the organisation.

The incorporation name was officially changed on 14 February 2007.

Olympiad Participants

Any registered school from Australia and New Zealand can participate in the Olympiads.

The Olympiads are open to all registered schools that have classes in the appropriate Division groups:

Division J : Up to 12 years of age and in school Year 6 (NZ Year 7) or below
Division S : Up to 14 years of age and in school Year 8 (NZ Year 9) or below

The Olympiads

Our annual Olympiads consist of 5 separate contests spread across the year.
Registered schools can enter teams of up to 30 students in the Olympiads.
Students compete on an individual basis and must complete each of the 5 contest papers to be eligible for awards.
Team scores are calculated after the 5th contest by the sum of the top 10 overall student scores within the team.

Division J (Junior)

Questions are set at a standard suitable to students at a level equivalent to Year 5 or 6.
Students from Year 4 or below may enter the Olympiad, but they could find the questions particularly challenging.
Competing students must not be older than 12 years of age at the 1st May of the current year and must be in School Year 6 (NZ School Year 7) or below.

Division S (Senior)

Division S questions are set at a standard suitable to students at a level equivalent to school Year 7 or 8.
Students from Year 6 or below may enter Division S, but they must also compete in the Primary School Olympiads.
Competing students must not be older than 14 years of age at the 1st May of the current year and must be in School Year 8 (NZ School Year 9) or below.

The Olympiads Aim To:

Introduce students to important mathematical concepts
Teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving
Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition
Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment for mathematics
Provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges

Student Awards

a certificate for each participating student
a medal for any student who obtains a perfect score
a trophy for the highest individual scorer in each team
a metal pin for each student whose total score is in the top 10% of scores
an embroidered Olympiad cloth patch for each student whose total score is in the top 25% of scores

Team Awards

a plaque for each team whose score is in the top 10% of scores
a large plaque for the team with the highest score
a perpetual shield for the the team with the highest score. This is kept for one year and then passed on to the winner of the next year's contest.
