Division S (Senior)

  • Division S questions are set at a standard suitable to students at a level equivalent to NSW school Year 7 or 8.

  • Students from Year 6 or below may enter Division S, but they must also compete in the Division J Olympiads.

  • Competing students must not be older than 14 years of age at the 1st May of the current year and must be in School Year 8 (NZ School Year 9) or below.

A. (Time: 5 minutes)

Jenny and Lenny pick 1/4 and 1/3 of a treeful of apples, respectively. Penny picks the rest of the apples.

If Lenny picks 7 more apples than Jenny does, how many apples does Penny pick?



B. (Time: 5 minutes)

The September price of a computer was $1000. Later, an October price was obtained by raising the September price by 20%. Then a November price was obtained by lowering the October price by 20%.

What was the November price in dollars?



C. (Time: 6 minutes)

In a quiz game of 20 questions, each correct answer earns 5 points. Each incorrect answer reduces the score by 2 points. Omitted questions score 0 points. Jana has a total score of 59 points.

How many questions did she omit?



D. (Time: 5 minutes)

How many different 5-digit palindromes are there?

(A palindrome is any number that reads the same forwards and backwards, such as 151, 729927 or 88388)



E. (Time: 7 minutes)

Square tiles 9-inches on a side cover the floor of a rectangular room exactly.The border tiles are white and all other tiles are blue. The room measures 18 feet by 15 feet.

How many tiles are white?

(One foot contains 12 inches)
